I understand how you feel. I've developed a mindset of making games that I would personally want to play.
I think that judging games for being "good" or "bad" is kinds lame in and of itself. There are a lot of things I am still interested in even if they got totally lambasted by critics because I still want to see how they could've worked out. It's the imagination that counts the most for me, and when my imagination gets spit on, it's almost debilitating.
Beautiful. Big pet peeve of mine is when people comment on a person's small personal game with a critical "review" like it needs to be a AAA hyper polished experience and must follow a capital G game formula. It's like going up to a persons sand castle on the beach and telling them it would look better if the castle was taller and had straight lines. I much prefer hearing about personal reflections rather than graded reviews.
fuck this rules!
this kinda made me wanna make games. just because i can. cause why not. i can't code or do anything computer related but do i care? no.
suggestions on itch are great! Nice essay. And Technically i'm curious about using any compiling language with WebAssembly. Obviously, i can use C++, so maybe one day i will be able to write game for browser in C++ or port existing one that i already made.
Are you familiar with emscripten? It's not simple but it does exactly that, C++ in the browser.
never heard about emscripten
hell yes! normalize making games as a hobby in the same way people take photos and doodle and write journals and do all sorts of other art for themselves! not every game has to be "the game industry." thank u for sharing this essay! keep makin games ur way for u!
I made an account just to comment how cool this is, thanks so much for putting it out here. Making games for the sake of making them IS a beautiful thing, games don't have to be made to be played, thank you!
Thank you - glad to hear you appreciated it
I really enjoyed this, thank you for sharing. :)
Thank you - can I ask how you discovered it?
I was looking through my feed and noticed Glenn Essex (https://shinyogre.itch.io/) had rated it, and I thought it looked interesting.
I think it's really important to make art for oneself. :)
